GARETH NYANDORO

Gareth Nyandoro was one of our early collaborators in the t-shirt project called Exchange Exchange were he and Detroit artist Mario Moore communicated with each other via Facebook and WhatsApp relaying their descriptions of each other’s city. From those descriptions each artist designed a t-shirt for the other city. In 2015, he was curated into an exhibit in Detroit called SIMBI dzebasa were ZCCD helped the funding of his project titled Mfana Wembudzi (the child of a goat).

Nyandoro was born in Bikita, Zimbabwe in 1982. He obtained a National Diploma in Fine Art from Harare Polytechnic in 2003 before furthering his studies in Creative Arts and Design at Chinhoyi University of Technology, Zimbabwe, in 2008. In 2014 and 2015, Nyandoro was a resident artist at the Rijksakedemie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Gareth Nyandoro was selected as the winner of the FT/OppenheimerFunds Emerging Voices 2016 Art Award.

In 2015, Nyandoro was one of three artists selected to represent the Zimbabwean Pavilion in a travelling exhibition titled Pixels of Ubuntu/ Unhu, curated by Raphael Chikukwa, for the 56th Venice Biennale in Italy, travelling further to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe and the Association for Visual Arts (AVA) Gallery, in Cape Town, South Africa in 2016.
Nyandoro presented his solo exhibition, Ruwa, at Tiwani Contemporary in London, UK in 2020. In 2019, his solo exhibition, JUGGLING SKILLS, opened at SMAC Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa, coinciding with the launch of the first publication dedicated to his work. Earlier solo exhibitions include: …READ ALL ABOUT at the Van Doreen Waxter Gallery in New York, USA in 2018; Stall(s) of Fame, at the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, France in 2017; IPA PO-IPAPO at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town, South Africa; Gareth Nyandoro at Art Brussels in Belgium; and Paper Cut in London, UK, all in 2016.

In 2019, Nyandoro exhibited alongside Alexandra Karakashian at the 13th edition of Art Dubai in Dubai, UAE with SMAC Gallery. In 2018, Nyandoro’s work was included in Five Bhobh: Painting at the End of an Era, a group exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, South Africa, and exhibited alongside Marlene Dumas, William Kentridge, Moshekwa Langa and Bahia Shebab in the group exhibition, Drawing Africa On The Map at the Quetzal Art Centre, Vidigueira, Portugal. In 2015, Nyandoro took part in Round – Tripping: Gareth Nyandoro and Richard Parry at Narrative Projects in London, UK; TREK: Following Journeys at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town; and Group Exhibition in Cologne, Germany. Earlier group exhibitions include; Zamboni for the Moose at Galerie Juliètte Jongma in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2014 and Live n Direct at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare in 2010. Nyandoro also featured in Colour Africa in Munich, Germany in 2011 and Expressions of Zimbabwe at the Université d’Aignon, France in 2008.
