DETZIM 26

A reception, conversation, and exhibition of ten artists from Detroit (USA) with ten from Zimbabwe.

DETZIM 26 is the fourth group research/workshop residency initiated through ZCCD (Zimbabwe Cultural Center Detroit) with the first in 2016 between CUT (Chinhoyi Univeristy of Zimbabwe) and CCS (College for Creative Studies, Detroit).
The premise of DETZIM is creating spaces for cultural and artistic exchanges initiated through material, process, and practice. Inspired by the early 1990s Utonga workshops run by Tapfuma Gutsa in Shurugwi, DETZIM explores material as a conduit for dialogue.
This year residency began with visiting some of Harare’s cultural landmarks and artist run spaces.

Then we took a cultural historical journey on our way to Mutare through Great Zimbabwe in Masvingo and stayed at Ubuntu Village near Gutu.

Accompanying our group is Dr Marie Scott who was one of the founding board member for Sadza Space in Detroit which now houses ZCCD. Among our hosts we had our fabulous chef, Nancy Mushakata.

Sadza Space is the new home for the Zimbabwe Cultural Center in Detroit (ZCCD) and the headquarters for the Wirecar Auto Workers Association of Detroit (WAWAD).

Our mission is to create a community where borders are porous, relationships are formed, and collaborations through art, music and food are created.
